Online gaming one of the big winners of 2020
The Nintendo Switch was largely sold out during the summer and the holidays and the PlayStation 5 and X Box Series X sold out immediately. During the pandemic more people began to play video games and more started watching gamers, as livestream services like Amazon’s Twitch and Facebook Gaming logged record growth. Tech giants like Google and Amazon are still investing in cloud gaming services like Stadia and Luna, hoping to join into the console wars dominated by Sony and Nintendo. Google’s video platform YouTube logged its best year ever in 2020, with more than 100 billion hours in gaming content watched. An analyst at Nielsen’s Video Game Arm Super data said they don’t foresee anything sort of a gaming crash due to economic factors.

SAN ANTONIO – Competitive video gaming, otherwise known as esports, is considered one of the fastest-growing sports globally. St. Mary’s University launched its Rattler esports program this year. Head coach of the program, Kaitlin Teniente, said Black and Latino students are often underrepresented because of lack of accessibility. However, the university hopes to bridge the divide by providing scholarships to future students who are people of color. “The idea is that these scholarships would help us, in turn, recruit that kind of student to bring them into the program,” Teniente said.

Xbox aims for another hit with Minecraft Dungeons launch
Fans of "Minecraft" may enjoy "Minecraft Dungeons," but it doesn't have the building and crafting element of the original title, so hardcore builders will likely skip the new game. Unlike "Minecraft," where you can build, mine and customize your surroundings, "Minecraft Dungeons" is focused on exploring dungeons and seeking adventure. This is something that can help families have a fun time together," said "Minecraft Dungeons" executive producer David Nisshagen. CNN Business played "Minecraft Dungeons" for several hours in a two-person party. Minecraft Dungeons is available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows and Xbox One.
