Bell Solloa is the founder and program manager of the High Voltage Music program. SAN ANTONIO – A mother in San Antonio is weighing the COVID-19 risks of sending her son back to in-person learning at Northside ISD after struggling with online schooling. Last month, Northside ISD revealed that its failure rate was close to double compared to the previous year’s first grading period. Northside ISD parent Katrina Ashworth said her two children have been learning online this year due to COVID-19 concerns. For her 9-year-old son, learning at home has been a significant challenge. Northside ISD campus staff members monitor student engagement and performance and are setting up systems to support struggling students.

SAN ANTONIO – A San Antonio mother is feeling the weight of the actions of a hit-and-run driver who left her son with life-threatening consequences. San Antonio police have identified the driver who hit him as Antonio Coronado, 20. According to a police report, Coronado panicked after hitting Nick Ruiz, kept driving, and called his mother. “He is uninsured, and I have no financial means to handle his bills,” Ida Ruiz said. Ida Ruiz hopes her son’s story servers as a lesson to other drivers, especially during the holiday months.

SAN ANTONIO – A San Antonio mother is desperate for answers after her son was shot at Confluence Park days before they planned to celebrate her birthday together. Lavinia Sabatino’s 21-year-old son, Jake Daniels Selph, later died at a hospital. “I was at work when he had left the house,” Sabatino said. Anybody who knew Jake knew he wouldn’t leave the house like that. “I don’t know if I can put into words the feeling I have,” she said.

That loved one was Xavier Esquivel, who was only 17. San Antonio police said Xavier Esquivel was gunned down after someone shot at least 20 rounds into the car he was driving at the intersection of South Olive and Aransas. Rosemary Lopez, 46, said that her son, Felix Christopher Lopez, 24, was beaten and kicked as police took him into custody. Lopez had led police on a chase for several miles before he stopped at his mother's Northeast side home Wednesday night, investigators said. Felix Christopher Lopez was arrested on outstanding warrants and for possession of marijuana charges. "But it doesn't look like excessive force was used."
