Red Cross recruiting more volunteers to help with evacuees coming from coast

Training session scheduled for Friday

SAN ANTONIO – Buses have already left San Antonio and returned with evacuees from the coast ahead of Hurricane Harvey's arrival. The Red Cross is getting even more volunteers ready to help.

Emergency personnel and volunteers have been in action throughout Thursday.

The Red Cross is hosting a pair of training sessions Friday for some extra hands on deck for what is anticipated to become a huge evacuee relief situation.

It's a year-round effort to recruit and train new volunteers exactly for moments like this.

The executive director of the Red Cross for the San Antonio area said having a good number of volunteer leaders and shelter supervisors allows the organization to add newer, less experienced volunteers with minimal preparations.

The Red Cross got a few volunteers to show up for Thursday’s training session despite the short notice.

The training Friday will be an hour long and will take place at the Red Cross Headquarters on East Houston Street. The workshop begins at noon.
