SAN ANTONIO – A driver for Papa John's Pizza was killed late Wednesday night while making a delivery on the Northwest Side, San Antonio police said.
San Antonio police responded to the incident around 9 p.m. at an apartment complex in the 6000 block of De Zavala Road.
SAPD investigators believe the driver was at the DeZavala Oaks Apartments to deliver a pizza, but left his vehicle running.
When he returned, a man was inside his car and proceeded to run over the delivery man. Police believe the victim was trying to stop the robber.
"I couldn't believe it that something like that could happen to a very common person who works for a living," said Mauricio Frausto, whose car was also hit while the robber was trying to get away.
Frausto woke up to the sound of the crash, and his girlfriend told him someone ran into his car.
"My initial concern was the car. I thought it was a hit-and-run to the car," Frausto said. "We went to go see the car, the damage, and we saw the man just laying there, and I already think he was unconscious."
The robber fled the scene while witnesses called police and paramedics.
The victim was transported to University Hospital, but pronounced dead a short time later.
His name was not immediately released, but police said he was 46 years old. The suspect remained at-large as of 1:30 p.m. Thursday.
"I really hope he gets caught. I mean, this guy committed pretty much murder -- ran over somebody in an attempt to get away from stealing a vehicle, so I just hope justice is served," Frausto said.
If caught, San Antonio police said the driver, believed to be in his late 20s, would be charged with capital murder.
