SAN ANTONIO – A local mother whose son was fatally shot after an apparent road rage incident is hoping a tribute to him will help others.
It's been four years since 20-year-old Eric Mendoza passed away.
"His life was cut short because of a senseless act of violence," said Patty Hernandez, Mendoza's mother.
Hernandez said her son was on his way to a friend's house after he got off work at Frito Lay.
She said he was coming from the access road of Interstate 35 and Rittiman Road when something went wrong.
"He did tell his friend on the phone that somebody was following him," said Hernandez. "I guess whoever it was cut him off and once they got him into the subdivision, they started shooting at him."
Patty said she is taking some comfort in a sign that has been placed at the entrance of Friendship Park in Kirby, reminding drivers the cost of road rage.
"On behalf of our City Council, they thought it was very important to allow a sign to be placed here in memory of the life that was lost," said Monique Vernon, City Manager of Kirby. "And to encourage others to be conscience when they're driving."
Hernandez said she is also working to get lawmakers to do something about road rage in this next legislative session, but in the meantime, she's hoping police can track down her son's killer(s) and she's asking anyone with information, to call Crime Stoppers at 210-224-STOP.
"I want to ask the public, anyone, if they know the most minimal detail, please come forward," said Hernandez.
