SAN ANTONIO – It has been a week since 19-year-old Esperanza Frausto was killed by a suspected drunk driver.
Family members said she was driving a friend home when the tragedy happened.
They add the suspected drunk driver not only tried to flee the scene, but was combative with police.
Abelino Frausto said a part of him died when his teenage daughter was killed.
Esperanza Alexis Frausto, fondly known to family and friends as Hopey, was hospitalized for five days after the accident on Oct. 18.
Despite being resuscitated twice, her step-mother Graciela Frausto said doctors couldn't save her.
"Her shoulder was all caved in, she had rib fractures , she had lacerations to her lungs , every single bone in her face was broken," said Frausto.
The accident happened off of Highway 16 headed towards Poteet. Accident investigators said the suspected drunk driver crossed at least one lane and the grassy median before hitting Frausto head-on.
What upsets Esperanza's parents the most was how officers described the suspected drunken driver's behavior after the accident.
"They say he was highly intoxicated, way above the limit, that he was combative, he tried to leave the scene, he was taken down at gun point," Abelino said.
In her memory, her father along with other family members tattooed on their arm the lyrics of Hopey's favorite song.
They take some comfort knowing, even though she lived a short life, it was full of love, laughter, and happiness.
"She was still trying to spread her wings, now she has her wings," said Abelino.
The suspected drunken driver has been charged with failure to render aid, family members said he has yet to be charged for intoxication and manslaughter.
