Suspect named in fatal stabbing of roommate

Jose Martinez, 47, charged with murder

SAN ANTONIO – Jose Martinez, 47, has been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of his roommate.

The roommate's body was found around 7:30 a.m. Monday on the porch of their North Side home near Beacon and West Lullwood streets.

As of 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, the Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office had not identified the 63-year-old victim.

Officers responded to the home after getting a call about a man slumped over in a chair on the porch with a large amount of blood at his feet. Police said they found Martinez inside the home and took him into custody.

"The victim and the suspect apparently were roommates at the location. They had been having some ongoing issues," Officer Douglas Greene, a San Antonio police spokesman, said. "We did not get that much information from the suspect on exactly what happened."

Police said Martinez claims that during the dispute, his roommate pulled out a knife first, causing him to reach for one.

The victim died after being cut on his ankle, police said. Why he remained in a chair outside his home after he was wounded still hasn't been explained.

"That is something that the officers are looking into. Why the victim wasn't provided immediate services or why he didn't seek immediate services," Greene said.

According to a neighbor, the man who was killed had trouble walking and used a cane to get around. She said both of the roommates always seemed friendly and never saw them fight.
