Far West Side neighbors come together to find missing 12-year-old boy

Police find boy just before midnight

SAN ANTONIO – It may take a village to raise a child, but a far West Side subdivision was determined to find one -- a missing 12-year-old boy.

Richard Gentry, the president of the homeowners association for the Villages of Westcreek subdivision, said an alert went out by way of a neighborhood app shortly before 9 p.m. Wednesday, telling people about the missing child.

He said the boy, who was last seen walking near his school, had not made it home.

Neighbors immediately began organizing a search party to scour the area near West Military outside Loop 1604, he said.

"We got about 60 or 70 folks to make it out here and luckily, the child was found safe and sound," Gentry said.  "It just means a lot to know that you're part of a community that will come together like this in the middle of the night, you know? Leave their homes to find somebody else's child."

Gentry said ultimately, San Antonio police officers located the boy about eight miles from his school, somewhere in the area of Culebra and Galm Roads.

He said it appears the child had gotten into trouble at school and ended up walking rather than riding the bus home from school.

There was no word from police on the condition of the child, but Gentry said he was "safe and sound."
