Council votes to build new Boerne City Hall

Rezoning request for 17 Herff also to be heard next month

BOERNE, Texas – The city of Boerne will soon break ground on a new City Hall and expand Herff Road in the area commonly known as SoBo. The council voted unanimously 5-0 Wednesday night to approve the sale of Texas tax notes for fund the projects.

The city will issue $22 million in notes, of which $20 million will go toward a new City Hall on the city campus along North Main Street near the Patrick Health Public Library.

The remain $2 million will go toward expanding Herff Road from South Main Street to the newly opened Interstate 10 access road in “South Boerne.” The area is seeing a rapid expansion in commercial development, with a new hotel and several business complexes planned. The extension will allow drivers to go to directly from I-10 to Highway 46 around downtown without having to travel on Main Street.

The 17 Herff development was also brought back into the conversation.

The Planning and Zoning Commission heard a request from the developer on Monday to rezone the property to allow for multfamily housing.

The City Council voted in April to zone the land as MU-1. The new zoning category is described as a walkable mixed-use area at a small scale, primarily for a blended mix of residential, commercial and retail service that supports adjacent neighborhood.

Later this month, the council will have to receive the new recommendation from the commission and the earliest there will be a public hearing would be at the Sept. 12 City Council meeting.
