The new center has room for 60 animals.

There are special kennels to accommodate animals together to allow for mother dogs and cats to be kept with their litters.

The facility will be manned by both the city of Kirby and the county.

"A couple of years ago, Bexar County took over animal control in the unincorporated area. Since then, we've been looking for an entity to partner with to operate a joint animal control facility. And so we were really impressed with the city of Kirby. Their high adoption rate and their operations,” said Renee Green, director of public works for Bexar County.

The facility was built to be expandable if needed.

Future expansions could include up to 60 additional kennels, offices and areas for training animals.
