SAN ANTONIO - A San Antonio-based charity has sent more than 20,000 diapers to Houston-area families displaced by recent floods.

Record-breaking showers in April displaced more than 1,300 people, resulting in an unmanageable number of calls to the Texas Diaper Bank, officials said.

Zachry Group in San Antonio stepped up to help with donations, including some from individual Houston-based employees.

"Thanks to Zachry Group, we're able to provide these items to families to give them one less item to worry about, but more importantly, (to) keep their children healthy," Texas Diaper Bank Executive Director Jorge Medina said.

Established in 1997 by 10 local United Methodist churches, Texas Diaper Bank currently serves 12,000 people in Bexar County and the surrounding area, focusing on providing aid to families in crisis.

Diapers are often the last item packed in emergency kits during disasters, and there are no federal aid groups dedicated to providing diapers during times of crisis, Medina said.

Organizations and businesses wanting to help the Texas Diaper Bank can call 210-731-8118.  Donations can be made at the diaper bank's office at 5415 Bandera Road Suite 504 or by visiting their website.
