Nearly 50 percent of nation's hot car deaths happened in Texas

SAN ANTONIO – Over the weekend, two Texas children died in hot cars, bringing the total number of hot car deaths in Texas to seven.

As of June 26, Texas led the nation in hot car deaths with seven for 2017, data from San Jose State's Jan Null shows.

More telling of the number is how Texas compares to the nation. Texas' seven hot car deaths make up nearly 50 percent of the national total, which is 15.

The state with the second most hot car deaths for 2017 is Florida with two deaths.

Goodman and Huynh's deaths are the latest hot car deaths in Texas. Huynh's father told authorities he thought he had dropped off his 7-month-old son with the babysitter before he went to work, but when his wife called asking where their son was, he realized his son was still in the car.

Goodman's parents told police their son was playing in an inoperable car outside of his Fort Worth home when he died.
