2017 BGC Preview: Steele Knights

CIBOLO, Texas – The Steele Knights came agonizingly close to a state title last season and are prepared to finish the job this season under new head coach David Saenz, who takes over for Scott Lehnhoff.

Saenz was the defensive coordinator last season.

Steele returns ten starters from a team that went 14-2 last season and lost in the 6A Division II state final to DeSoto.

Their only other loss last year was to Lake Travis, the 6A Division I state champion.

Steele will face Lake Travis out of district this season along with another San Antonio area power, the O’Connor Panthers.

Steele won district last season, but the schedule once again features tough showdowns against highly rated Judson, Clemens and Smithson Valley.

The Knights will have a new starting quarterback, which means they will lean on their defense, particularly their secondary, early in the season.

The secondary features three seniors who are Division I college recruits: Caden Sterns, JT Woods and JayVeon Cardwell.

Aiding the new quarterback will be a solid offensive line and running back Brenden Brady and wide receiver Onyx Smith, both college recruits as well.

Steele’s run for another state title begins on Sept. 1 when the Knights host the Madison Mavericks.
