Conservative group ALEC ranks Texasโ Greg Abbott as nationโs top governor
According to a recent report from national industry-backed conservative groups, Texas Gov. ALEC has a large footprint at the Republican-controlled Texas Legislature, serving up fill-in-the-blank bills and campaign funds to Republican legislators. The only Democrat governor that made the top 10 in the report was Colorado Governor Jared Polls, who came in ninth. Abbott, who is serving his second term as Texas governor, has received criticism on his handling of the coronavirus pandemic from both Republicans and Democrats in 2020. Texas isnโt the only state seeing an uptick in coronavirus cases and deaths and some states are imposing tighter restrictions.

A team of Texas firefighters and support personnel are working to help combat the devastating California wildfires under Governor Greg Abbottโs order. The governor issued the order Friday, deploying approximately 190 firefighters, 50 fire trucks, and 10 command vehicles from 56 Texas fire departments. The teams were deployed to California Friday. As of Friday, the Lightning Complex fire has burned 372,971 acres in Santa Clara County, Alameda County, Contra Costa County, San Joaquin County, Stanislaus County, Merced County, and San Benito County, ABC 7 reports. The deployment of the Texas response team was made possible through the Texas Intrastate Fire Mutual Aid System (TIFMAS).

2 bars issued permit suspensions for defying Gov. Abbotts order to shut down, agency says
The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission suspended liquor permits for two bars that defied Gov. Greg Abbotts executive order to shut down in order to stop the spread of COVID-19, according to a release. TABC agents visited 628 bars across Texas on Friday, finding 30 originally in violation of Gov. Abbotts order. Following conversations with agents, 28 of those bars then agreed to shut their doors, according to the release.
KSAT Explainer: Legal twists and turns in battle over mail-in voting in Texas
That same day, the Texas Democratic Party filed a lawsuit in Travis County District Court in an effort to expand who qualifies for mail-in voting in Texas. Under current Texas Election Code, anyone can apply to vote by mail, but applicants have to list a reason. Paxton and other critics have cited concerns about voter fraud being a primary factor to not allow an expansion of mail-in voting in Texas. On May 14, a state appeals court upheld Sulaks temporary order to expand mail-in voting, but Paxton asked the Texas Supreme Court to intervene. This weeks episode of KSAT Explains will focus on the battle brewing across Texas over the proposed expansion of mail-in voting.
