GMSA@9 Debrief: Diving into Tejano history

SAN ANTONIO – KSAT12′s Erica Hernandez joined GMSA@9 on Tuesday to discuss Tejano’s history. Texas history is something we all learned about when we were in school, but Tejano history dates much further into the 1600s. “Texas begins in 1690 and that the first soldier settlers that come here to defend their northernmost boundaries become known at Tejanos because this is Tejas,” businessman, historian Rudi Rodriguez said. GMSA@9 Debrief: New San Antonio initiative looks to increase number of Latina voters

SAN ANTONIO – KSAT12′s Erica Hernandez joins GMSA@9 to discuss a new San Antonio initiative that looks to increase the number of Latina voters. According to Pew Research, Latinos are expected for the first time to be the nation’s largest racial or ethnic minority in a U.S. presidential election, with a record 32 million projected to be eligible to vote. Despite that statistic, the number of Latinos registered to vote is still far below the 60 million Latinos who live in the country. To view the video, click above.

Defenders Debrief: What BCSO is doing to reduce number of deputy DWI arrests

SAN ANTONIO – The Defenders' Dillion Collier joins GMSA@9 to discuss what the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office is doing to reduce the number of deputy DWI arrests. “At some point, you just gotta say ‘stop,’ draw the line in the sand, and say ‘we’re not tolerating it anymore,’” said Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar. Salazar, who has repeatedly said he would “cut them out like a cancer” after deputies run afoul of the law, contends that 2018 was the tipping point of having to address drunk-driving issues within the agency’s rank and file. GMSA@9 Debrief: City to vote on budget, Aquifer Protection Program

SAN ANTONIO – Editor’s Note: During the debrief, KSAT reporter Garrett Brnger misspoke and said the city was considering furloughs for this year. In fact, the city is weighing that option for next year. KSAT12′s Garrett Brnger joins GMSA@9 to discuss city council’s vote on two big items on Thursday: the budget and the Aquifer Protection Program. The $2.9 billion proposed budget is $7.7 million less than what council passed for the FY 2020, but includes numerous cuts to balance out the expected revenue reduction because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Edwards Aquifer Protection Program could also have a new source of funding secured, as it faces the loss of the 1/8 cent sales tax that has funded it for the past 20 years.

Susan Perez provided records showing she invested a total of $380,000 in the Boerne-based aviation asset business, using retirement funds left by her late husband, a San Antonio Fire Department captain who died following complications from routine surgery in 2011.
