Chef transforms his backyard into a restaurant

Flavor Favs: Guero's Backyard

SAN ANTONIO – Chef Craig Ognoskie is calling it a second chance.

Guero's Backyard is a new venture Ognoskie started with his wife earlier this year, and already it has become a big hit in Seguin.

"It's nice because you get things in life, not necessarily taken for granted, just you're not always going to have everything that you have," Ognoskie said. "You never know when you could lose something special."

After a health issue and family tragedy, Ognoskie had a life reboot and graduated from the Culinary Institute of America here in San Antonio.

Ognoskie is now selling fusion street food right from his home.

The backyard of his house is the restaurant.

"My wife and I live upstairs," Ognoskie said.

The food is one-of-a-kind, from the Reuben egg roll to the soul train taco that includes rib meat, collard greens and mashed butternut squash. It may not sound like it mixes well, but every bite was filled with flavor.

"I like the idea of a combination of different things," Ognoskie said.

Open Tuesday through Sunday, Guero's Backyard is really a place where "mi casa, es su casa."

"That's what food is all about, is sharing with people," Ognoskie said.
