New trail proposed to honor accident victim in Stone Oak

Public input wanted for proposed nature trail at Parman Library in honor of Wyatt McDaniel

SAN ANTONIO – The public is invited to offer opinion on a proposed plan to name a new nature trail from Wilderness Oak Elementary to Parman Library in honor of Wyatt McDaniel, a former Wilderness Oak student who died in an accident in January 2013.

The 7-year-old had been playing in a sand pile which collapsed and suffocated him before emergency crews could rescue him.

As his family has tried to recover from the shock, his mother created Wyatt's Way, a fundraising organization to help foster children get Christmas gifts each year.

"He was the kid that you know, if he saw a child that no one would play with, he would walk up and ask him to play. He loved everybody," Lara McDaniel said.

Thousands of dollars have been raised with Wyatt's Way, and she says this latest honor is incredible too.

"I can't even thank everybody. I don't even know who everybody was. It's just a great outpouring of love, and for me, that's what it represents," McDaniel said.

If approved, the new Wyatt's Way Trail will be an ungroomed stretch of path leading from the Parman Library to Wilderness Oak Elementary, two places that McDaniel said Wyatt loved dearly.

She said he was quite upset by the impact of construction on nature in the area, so leaving it a bit rough will be a good fit.

"This is perfect. This is a perfect memorial for him. It just yells Wyatt," she said.
