Man killed in first fatal crash of 2015

Victim lost control on West Commerce near Buena Vista Street

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police are investigating the first deadly crash of 2015.

It happened just after 2 a.m. Friday on the city's West Side.

Police said the driver was headed east on West Commerce Street when he lost control of his vehicle and took out 50 feet of guardrail before slamming into the cement poles in front of a closed-down restaurant.

The driver had to be cut out of the car and died at the scene.

Some West Side residents who are familiar with how the road in the 3700 block of West Commerce curves into Buena Vista Street said Friday's wreck isn't the first they've seen like this.

"I'm not surprised," said Roy Thatcher, who lives down the street. "I've seen it a lot. I've seen that guardrail get replaced five or six times."

Thatcher said he knows to avoid the area when he's walking.

However, he is still hoping that the city will step in to make the intersection a little safer.

"I think it's a real dangerous intersection," said Thatcher. "They (have) got to start putting signs up or something to slow down."

"I don't know if there should be a crossway here," said Barney Ytuarte, a West Side resident. "Or maybe you want to put up some lights or something."

Police are looking into whether speed or wet roads caused the accident.

They are also checking to see if alcohol was a factor.
