SAN ANTONIO – A Behind the Kitchen Door investigation has revealed that food services at San Antonio's nine largest hospitals all passed their most recent health inspections.
Four even received perfect scores. Five others had a small number of violations.
KSAT requested the most recent health inspections for each hospital from Metro Health. Here is what those reports show.
Perfect scores were given to:
- Christus Santa Rosa Westover Hills
- Metropolitan Methodist
- Northeast Baptist
- Methodist Hospital
Three demerits were given to:
- Christus Santa Rosa Downtown (the inspector found food debris in a slicer)
- St. Luke's Baptist (a food mixer needed to be cleaned)
Four demerits were given to:
- North Central Baptist (food labeled improperly; there was an issue with their dishwasher)
- Southwest General (the inspector saw an employee drinking out of a cup with no lid)
Seven demerits were given to:
- University Hospital (water at hand-washing sinks wasn't hot enough; rodent droppings were found in the main kitchen area)
Due to the nature of University Hospital's demerits, KSAT reached out to the hospital's administration for an update.
Their spokesperson, Leni Kirkman, says the staff took immediate action after that health inspection. She tells KSAT nearby construction was the source of the rodent problem.
"As they were excavating for that building, the contractor tells us that unearthed some habitats," Kirkman said.
KSAT looked University Hospital up on Metro Health's website and found scores dating back to 2008. It lists 11 health inspections from 2008 to 2014.
The most demerits the hospital received on any of those inspections was 10, which is ranked as an excellent score by the health department. On two of the 11 inspections, University Hospital received perfect scores.
