Suspect in alleged apartment rental scheme back in jail

Joseph Mendez, 41, in custody on theft charge

SAN ANTONIO – Joseph Mendez, 41, a suspect in an alleged apartment rental scheme, has been taken into custody for the second time this week.

Records show he was arrested Wednesday evening on a charge of theft-enhanced.

San Antonio police believe Mendez has been posing as a landlord and stealing money from people who believed they were renting apartments from him.

Police said in reality, the apartment building had been condemned and Mendez did not own it.

Although investigators believe there were several victims, an arrest warrant affidavit related to the case gives details about one victim.

It stated that a 38-year-old woman had paid Mendez $950 in rent for an apartment.

Officers originally arrested Mendez earlier this week. However, at the time, they said they could hold him only on outstanding traffic warrants.

Police later obtained a warrant related to the theft charge and took him into custody.
