Bicyclist, 18, rescued from high water near Leon Creek

Man told firefighters water flooded in suddenly, sweeping him away

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio firefighters have rescued an 18-year-old man who got caught up in high-water near Leon Creek.

The man told firefighters he was riding his bicycle to work early Thursday, traveling along a bike trail near Leon Creek when the water suddenly rose and swept him away.

He happened to have a cellphone with him and called 911 himself, shortly after 4 a.m.

“We were talking to him,” said Battalion Chief Richard Giusti with SAFD. “All of us were trying to use our sirens while we were talking to him on the phone to pinpoint his location. So that was one of the best ways we could do that, to find him.”

They eventually located the man in the water near Ebert Road, not far from Bandera Road, and plucked him out of the water.

Firefighters said he had been in the water for about 30 minutes.

Although they had four-wheelers, a boat and helicopter ready to go, they did not need to use any of the equipment.

After the rescue, the man was checked out by paramedics at the scene but did not appear to have suffered any serious injuries.

Someone later arrived at the scene and picked him up in a private car.
