Alamo plan moves forward as mayor, Texas land commissioner sign joint resolution

SAN ANTONIO – A multimillion-dollar plan to redevelop the Alamo and Alamo Plaza is moving forward as Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush and Mayor Ron Nirenberg put their seal of approval on a 50-year lease.

Bush and Nirenberg signed a joint resolution Tuesday agreeing, in principle, on the revitalization of the Alamo.

"Today is a historic day not only for the Alamo, but the city of San Antonio, but also the state of Texas," Bush said in a press conference Tuesday. "The reason is, that this is the end, really, of the beginning of executing a master plan."

After three years of planning, Bush said state and local officials are nearing a finalized agreement on the redevelopment of the Alamo.

According to a news release, the state of Texas and city of San Antonio will enter into a 50-year lease that will be voted on by San Antonio City Council members in the coming weeks.

Bush said discussions about details, including street closures, will be forthcoming and that there are still more procedural hurdles and local votes that need to take place.

"Rest assured, those details will protect the best interests of San Antonio, of the Alamo, of the state of Texas and all of history," Nirenberg said of the details to be discussed in the coming weeks.

Nirenberg said local officials have given careful consideration to the various aspects of the redevelopment and said the modifications will elevate the Alamo to world class status.

The Alamo plan will feature the largest collection of Alamo-related artifacts, courtesy of British rocker, Phil Collins, and will revamp the areas immediately surrounding the area of the historic site.
