Memorial Day ceremony at Fort Sam Houston remembers fallen soldiers

Large crowd shows despite threatening skies

Under threatening rainy skies Monday morning, more than 100 people visited Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery for a special Memorial Day ceremony.
Patriotic music echoed through the cemetery as visitors wearing plastic rain jackets and clutching umbrellas gathered to pay tribute to those who died serving their country.
A 21-gun salute came as clouds grew thicker and patchy rain began falling.
For some, it was a fitting reminder of the somber reason for the gathering.
Justin Sherfy attended the ceremony with his kids so that they can respect veterans.
"The biggest reason was I have three boys, and I want them to grow up and appreciate Memorial Day and the sacrifices our veterans have made," Sherfy said.
Sherfy said he was impressed by the size of the crowd on a day when there were ominous rain clouds.
"Sometimes I feel like people take for granted what we have," he said. "And when I come out here and I see a big group of diverse people that love this country, that just really warms my heart."
For one woman who came to the ceremony, this Memorial Day was extra special.
Christine Hill lost her father, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps, less than a year ago.
"My father passed away nine months ago today," Hill said.
Hill was visiting the cemetery when she heard the ceremony in the background.
"We came out here, me and my husband and my little girl, to give thanks," Hill said. "We have a memorial in our home for my father and we see it every day. I just want the families of those who have fallen to know that there are people out there that do think about others and those that have gone before their time."
Hill said people should remember the sacrifices that have been made to keep our country free.
