‘Extremely tragic situation’: 5-year-old boy found dead in vehicle outside preschool on West Side, SAPD says

Chief William McManus said the boy’s mother thought she had dropped the child off at the preschool

SAN ANTONIO – A 5-year-old boy was found dead on Wednesday inside a vehicle outside a preschool on the West Side, according to San Antonio police.

The boy, later identified as Aiden Martinez, was found on Wednesday afternoon in the 400 block of Carson Hill Drive, near Potranco Road.

On Saturday, the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office told KSAT Aiden died from hyperthermia. His death was ruled an accident.

SAPD Chief William McManus said the boy’s 22-year-old mother would typically drop the child off at Pinnacle Kids Academy and then drive to work nearby.

The mother told police that she thought she had dropped Aiden off at the preschool. However, McManus said she went to work with the boy inside the car.

McManus said the woman drove to the preschool after work to pick up Aiden, but staff told her she had not dropped him off, according to a preliminary SAPD report.

Aiden was found dead in the vehicle’s back seat, according to McManus. He had been in the vehicle since early Wednesday morning.

Detectives are investigating whether the mother accidentally or intentionally left the boy in the vehicle, McManus said.

McManus briefed reporters regarding the investigation, which can be watched below:
