Hundreds of health care workers have flown into El Paso to pick up shifts from exhausted doctors and nurses and to staff tent hospitals erected in parking lots. The El Paso Long Term Acute Care hospital, physician-owned and licensed for 33 beds, is pitching in as it can. The COVID-19 patient transferred out was stable and would be back in a few days, she said.

LOS ANGELES – Police Chief Michel Moore called for calm in the streets Friday after what he called a spasm of gun violence in South Los Angeles killed four and wounded 19 wounded in the past six days as the city has recorded nearly 40 more homicides so far this year than last year. “This is a pace of shooting and violence that we've not seen in years,” Moore said as he and community leaders condemned the crimes. The city as a whole has recorded 39 more killings and 101 more shootings to date compared with last year. Moore blamed the COVID-19 pandemic for fueling the violence because of the economic turmoil it has caused while also giving people few outlets for social contact. A week ago, she met with mothers of murder victims and heard “countless stories" of children no longer with them.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The lone Kentucky detective facing charges related to the fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor pleaded not guilty Monday. The decision not to charge the officers set off protests in Louisville and across the country. On Monday, Louisville's mayor lifted the curfew put in place after people refused to end their nighttime protests. Her response comes after Democratic state Rep. Attica Scott was charged with the felony last week while participating in Louisville protests for racial justice. Many marched along Louisville’s streets chanting “Breonna Taylor, say her name,” and “no justice, no peace."

State Rep. Attica Scott was arrested and charged Thursday evening with first-degree rioting, a felony, and two misdemeanor counts: unlawful assembly and failure to disperse. The Black lawmaker on Friday called the charges “ludicrous" and said those arrested were “traumatized” by Louisville police. Last month, the Louisville Democrat unveiled legislation she dubbed “Breonna's Law" that would ban no-knock search warrants in Kentucky and impose new requirements on police practices. Scott said she and her daughter joined protesters gathered downtown Thursday evening, following them in a car as they started marching.

The eICU program has been in place since 2008, and staff members say its been a crucial program during the COVID-19 pandemic.
