SAN ANTONIO – A permanent outdoor display of artwork by veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder was dedicated Sunday morning on the South Side at Good News Lutheran Church.
The display is the end result of a program for veterans with PTSD that uses art as a way to heal.
Cody Vance, a U.S. Air Force veteran and director of the program, created a piece titled, "One Piece at a Time."
He described his art as "bringing pieces of us in that we find that we like, things that we don't find work well with us and take a piece out so we are slowly rebuilding."
He said even though he is fortunate to have never experienced the pain and fear of PTSD, he understands other vets with PTSD and how it inspires their art.
"A lot of our vets, I hear that they constantly are searching for a reason to get out of bed, just to put a foot on the floor. This gave them that," he said.
Anyone can visit the artwork, which is now permanently on display outside of the church at 11020 Old Corpus Christi Road at Highway 181.
