Bexar County Fire Marshal Chris Lopez said the number of house fires may increase around this time of year as people use potentially dangerous heating sources. “As colder weather arrives, we begin to see an increase of home fires,” Lopez said. Turn off and unplug space heaters when they will be unaccompanied, and make sure it has an automatic shutoff. The San Antonio Fire Department recommends that space heaters be plugged directly into a wall outlet.

Kyle Coleman died earlier this month at the age of 69 from COVID-19, his family and Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff said. He was one of these public servants that really knew what it meant to be a public servant and gave his life in fighting this terrible pandemic, Wolff said. Bexar Countys Fire Marshal Chris Lopez, spoke about how Coleman often shared stories of his days in law enforcement. Prior to working for emergency management, Coleman had been with the Bexar County Sheriffs Office, where he once earned the Medal of Valor for saving people in a nursing home from a fire.

The Bexar County Commissioners Court on Thursday approved the ban as the area continues to see dry conditions amid sweltering heat. According to a news release from the Commissioners Court, the Keetch-Byram Drought Index shows Bexar County has an index of 566, increasing from 398.24 since June 30.
