news.yahoo.comFree Krispy Kreme doughnuts, cash and even marijuana — businesses pile on the perks for getting vaccinated
Getting America vaccinated will go a long way toward helping the country return to some sort of normal. Kroger is awarding employees $100 in store credit in addition to a one-time $100 payment for taking the vaccine. Publix said it will give associates a $125 gift card to use in the store after they get both doses. For its part, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts is offering anyone — employed or not — with proof of a Covid vaccination a free doughnut. But that's likely to change, according to Amber Clayton, director of the Society for Human Resource Management's Knowledge Center.
cnbc.comWhen will you be able to get vaccinated at work? Experts weigh in
Getting America's workforce vaccinated will go a long way toward helping the country reach herd immunity. Instacart, Target, Trader Joe's, McDonald's and Dollar General are among a growing list of companies giving workers time off and extra money to get vaccinated for Covid-19. Others, including Amazon, Uber and DoorDash, are going a step further by lobbying state officials to secure vaccines for their workers. Companies in the retail, airline, restaurant and meatpacking industries have also lobbied for priority access. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recently issued guidance that paves the way for how companies will be able to make a Covid vaccine available at no cost to all eligible employees.
cnbc.comGrocers fight "hero pay" mandates for frontline workers
The legal battles come as some municipalities have looked to step in after "hazard pay" for many grocery workers lapsed, even as they continue to face risk on the job. At least 134 grocery workers have died of COVID-19, and more than 28,700 have been exposed to a positive case, according to the United Food and Commercial Workers union. Seattle's new law mandating $4-an-hour increases for employees of large grocery chains has the Northwest Grocery Association and the Washington Food Industry Association battling the city to court. BIG WIN: Grocery #HazardPay passes in Los Angeles and Trader Joe's expands hazard pay for its grocery workers nationwide. The statewide trade group has filed federal suits against the cities of Oakland and Montebello after both approved ordinances mandating an extra five bucks an hour for workers of large grocery chains.
cbsnews.comTrader Joe's hikes hazard pay for its U.S. workers, but there's a catch
A Seattle law requiring large grocery stores to pay their front-line workers an extra four bucks an hour takes effect as of Wednesday, and Trader Joe's, for one, is opting to extend the additional cash beyond the city to pay its workers more nationwide. But the temporary wage bump comes with a catch: The supermarket chain is also canceling midyear raises for its roughly 10,000 employees. Trader Joe's on Tuesday said it would temporarily raise hazard pay for all of its hourly workers across the U.S., bringing the company's hazard pay to $4 an hour, in line with a mandate passed last week by the Seattle City Council. While Trader Joe's made no reference to Seattle or similar moves by some cities in California, a separate message to employees makes the connection clear, as first reported by the Seattle Times. Trader Joe's did not return a request for comment.
cbsnews.comInstacart and Trader Joe's to pay workers to get vaccines, while DoorDash and others say no
As vaccinations continue across the U.S., some companies are offering financial incentives to encourage their workers to get their shots. It joins others, including Trader Joe's and Dollar General, which plan to pay workers extra if they get vaccinated. The panel said grocery workers — which would include Instacart and Dollar General's employees — should be in the second group to receive shots after health care workers and nursing home residents. Delivery app DoorDash, another big platform for gig workers, said it has asked the CDC and governors to prioritize delivery workers in vaccine distribution. Instacart is among several companies that have lobbied for their workers to be prioritized for vaccines.

Those are key statistics for Newsom as he gauges when and how to reopen the state.
cnbc.comU.S. may need to extend social distancing for virus until 2022, study says
REUTERS/Tom Brenner(Reuters) - The United States may need to endure social distancing measures adopted during the coronavirus outbreak until 2022, according to researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health. The overall death toll in the U.S. from the virus stands at more than 28,300 as of Tuesday. Intermittent distancing may be required into 2022 unless critical care capacity is increased substantially or a treatment or vaccine becomes available, the Harvard researchers said in findings published Tuesday in the journal Science. The study acknowledged that prolonged distancing would most likely have profoundly negative economic, social, and educational consequences. The epicenter has shifted from China, where the virus emerged in December, to the United States, which has now recorded the most deaths.

feeds.reuters.comFrom chatty employees to $5 wine: How Trader Joe's turns customers into fanatics
A trip to Trader Joe's is an odyssey, with struggles, discovery and the spoils of victory: Its parking lots are notorious ("If you didn't have a near death experience in a parking lot, did you even go to Trader Joe's?" But Trader Joe's shoppers inevitably leave with an exciting new snack addiction and a respectable bottle of wine for under $5. That odyssey, the emotional journey, is part of what has inspired consumers' obsession with Trader Joe's. And when Trader Joe's opened it's store in Germantown outside of Memphis in Tennessee, more than 500 people reportedly waited in line. At first, Julian was content to be buckled into his mom's cart while he munched on some snacks. But by the time Alexandra Seba, 29, got to the checkout line, Julian was done watching 3-year-old Jade live the big girl cart dream. Like many moms, she knows what it's like to worry about what other people think during a toddler's tantrum.
A step-by-step guide to buying great wine without going broke
"Brand name plays a part that's true for wine regions too," Isles says. "Famous regions, you're kind of paying an upcharge just for the name." For the most part, ignore the label"Labels have absolutely nothing to do with the quality of the wine," Isles says. In contrast, European wine regions tend to have restrictive labeling laws, so the words used to describe the wine may reference official qualifications. cnbc.com5 groceries that are cheaper at Aldi than Trader Joe's
If you're shopping at Trader Joe's to score the best prices, chances are, you're getting a pretty good deal. "Aldi, happily, has a lot of good quality, good-tasting products at good prices," John Karolefski, grocery store analyst and editor of Grocery Stories, tells CNBC Make It. It's a strategy similar to the one used by Trader Joe's, but Aldi is able to beat their prices because it also takes a stripped-down approach in its stores. It's worth noting that Aldi U.S. and Trader Joe's are independently operated companies with distinct but once-related corporate parents. It could be said that Aldi and Trader Joe's are "estranged cousins."
