Counselors being made available at schools affected by shooting, standoff in SW Bexar County

Southwest ISD confirms boy shot is student at Scobee Middle School

SAN ANTONIO – Classmates of a boy who was shot outside a West Bexar County home by a man who later became the subject of a standoff with sheriff’s deputies will have a chance to discuss their fears and concerns with counselors on Friday.

Janice Hernandez, the communications director for the Southwest Independent School District, confirmed the 13-year-old boy is a student at Scobee Middle School.

Deputies responded to the 2900 block of Ash Field Drive around 3:30 p.m. Thursday for a report of a shooting.

When they arrived, they found the teen and a woman who had been shot.

Both were reported to be in critical condition and were airlifted to a hospital for treatment.

Deputies believed the shooter was still armed and inside the home.

Negotiators spent hours trying to convince him to surrender but were unsuccessful.

Shortly after 8:30 p.m., Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar announced that the standoff was over and the suspect was dead, due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Salazar said it appeared the man may have ended his own life soon after he shot the two victims.

During the early hours of the incident, three schools in the area were placed on lockdown.

Hernandez said because of the potential danger and closed roads, students from those schools were not allowed to travel home on school buses.

Parents of children who attend Kriewald Road Elementary and Big Country Elementary had to pick up their children at Southwest High School.

Although Scobee Middle School was also, technically, under lockdown, students were not affected.

Hernandez said most already had left for the day.

She said counselors would also be available for students at all three schools throughout the day Friday.
