McAllen District 4 City Commission candidates express perspective of city in forum
Candidates for the only contested race in the city of McAllen’s municipal election expanded on their platform during a candidate forum held Thursday evening. McAllen City Commissioner for District 4 Rodolfo “Rudy” Castillo and his challenger, Javier Salazar, participated in the forum hosted by Futuro RGV. “If you don’t live in my district, you would probably have the perception that everything is OK with McAllen when it’s not,” Salazar said. “We’re third in the nation of the safest (cities) so I think our fire department, our police department are doing their best,” Castillo said. “I’m sorry, the numbers don’t correlate, at least not in my district,” Salazar said.

Early voting continues Monday in the special election for the District 4 McAllen City Commission post, a race that has seen a small turnout so far. Three candidates are in the running to be the next city commissioner for District 4, an area on the south side of the city. Though having resigned, Ramirez is continuing to serve on the city commission until a replacement is elected. So far, from Jan. 5 through Jan. 13, a total of 252 people cast a ballot during the early voting period. Early voting in the District 4 race will continue Monday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

McAllen commissioners unanimously approved an ordinance calling for a special election to be held Jan. 22 to fill Commissioner Tania Ramirez’s vacant District 4 seat. The move comes two weeks after Ramirez announced that she will be challenging current Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez for the Democratic nomination. During Monday’s regular meeting of the McAllen city commission, Mayor Javier Villalobos expressed urgency in filling Ramirez’s seat. “As you all know, our commissioner from District 4 announced that she will be running for county judge, and pursuant to the Texas Constitution, creates an automatic vacancy,” Villalobos said during Monday’s meeting. Cortez has served as county judge since his election in 2018.

Many people who live in District 4 only speak Spanish, so Rocha Garcia is making sure the Spanish speaking community is informed by leaning on the local media outlets. “We reached out to one of our Spanish stations and held a vaccine information session with them,” Rocha Garcia said. Rocha Garcia and her team are scouting different locations for possible vaccine distribution sites when the supply becomes available. Rocha Garcia said many people don’t have access to internet in her district.

Early voting ends Dec. 8. The runoff election is Dec. 12; the early voting period ends Dec. 8. The early voting period began Nov. 30, and as of that day, only 24 people have cast their ballot, per the Bexar County Elections Department website. Northwest Vista College, Palo Alto College and this college are acting as polling locations. The runoffs are happening because no one candidate received more than the 50% majority vote needed to win the election.

The runoff date and polling locations will be decided in a special meeting of the board of trustees Nov. 17. In the District 4 race, she collected the most votes, 22,908. She also said she will continue to reach out to the community and encourages everyone to vote in the runoff because every vote matters. In the District 9 race, candidate Leslie Sachanowicz received 32,778 votes, against incumbent Joe Jesse Sanchez’s 24,476. Macias received 21,282 votes.

She brought her five children to a walk-up testing site off Southwest Military Drive and South Zarzamora Thursday afternoon. The mobile testing site is just one of several across the district. She said the majority of the people in her district that test positive are hispanic.

Gallegos said also that there must be an exploration of new teaching areas involving technology and cybersecurity. Today, his journey and parents act as motivation for his candidacy for District 4. He obtained a master’s degree in social work and two bachelor’s degrees in sociology and social work from Our Lady of the Lake University. Northwest Vista College, Palo Alto College and this college are early voting locations.

SAN ANTONIO - People in the South San Independent School District said they feel like the problems between the board of trustees and superintendent are like a bad movie that keeps repeating. According to the district records, Alexandro Flores is the sixth superintendent since 2011 to leave before finishing their contract. A special election is conducted in the same manner as the district's general election except as provided by Election Code. The board could pick people to fill the vacancies or it could hold a special election. Board President Connie Prado said the discussion about what happens next will take place during the next board meeting.
