Superintendent Pedro Martinez says the San Antonio Independent School District is “very strict” about quarantining both staff and students in the case of possible COVID-19 exposures. So far, there have been two rounds of federal relief funding — the CARES Act in March 2020 and the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act (CRRSA) in December. None of the poverty funding, none of the special-ed funding, none of those extra funds for children who have extra needs, has ever been held harmless.”The Texas Education Agency says that all Texas school districts were fully funded for the 2019-2020 school year.

Phase five allows all students back in the classroom and phase three allows no more than 15 students per classroom. NEISD has a comprehensive safety plan that was developed with input from teachers, district staff, community members and medical professionals. If the grievance issues are not resolved at the district level, the NEEA can file an appeal to the state education commissioner.

Only students whose parents or guardians previously signed up for in-person learning for the second grading period will be allowed to return to the classroom. Parents can still keep their children in virtual learning, and they may change learning environments for them every four weeks. Once the new students are back on campus, they must wear masks, wash their hands and practice social distancing. Northside ISD also plans to accept new students Monday for in-person learning.
