Officials believe the inmate suffered an apparent medical episode. The deputy entered the cell and performed life-saving measures on the inmate while also calling for further medical assistance. Part of the plan includes re-purposing part of the jail for the unit and bringing in mental health care specialists. Precinct 1 Commissioner-elect Rebeca Clay-Flores said she understands that mental health is a major problem that needs to be addressed locally. “A big part of my campaign has been on mental health,” Clay-Flores said. Before the mental health care unit would come into fruition at the jail, the proposal must be approved by the Bexar County Commissioners Court.
