At the end of the first full week of the 2021 high school volleyball season, McCollum hosted an eight-team tournament where the Cowboys, Stevens Falcons and Harlandale Indians all earned dramatic three-set victories over Holmes, Marshall and East Central respectively.

McCollum overcomes adversity to beat Southwest

The month of January has been a test in resiliency and overcoming hardship for the McCollum Cowboys girls’ basketball team. “This is an emotional game for us,” McCollum coach Ernest Lopez said. We’re just continuing to work hard to get even better than we were before.”Along with Alexis Martinez, McCollum got key baskets and contributions from several players in the pivotal fourth quarter in which McCollum outscored Southwest 22-9. Southwest, keyed by a three-pointer from Emily Sanchez, went on a 7-0 run to whittle the McCollum lead to 45-38 with 1:54 remaining in the game. Lopez said McCollum is focused on making the playoffs, which it last did in 2018.

McCollum rebounds to defeat Southside in overtime

McCollum’s Jan. 2 game at Southside seemed to be an early glimpse of the top two teams in District 27-5A. The Cowboys (10-2, 2-1) recovered to share second place with Southwest (6-8, 2-1) by virtue of a 78-75 overtime win against Southside (2-8, 1-1). Torres (23 points) scored on an inbounds lob at the buzzer to send it to overtime. “It was a battle of two teams that want to win district,” Southside coach Shawn Dalbert said. It may have been a blessing in disguise.”The McCollum game was the first for Southside’s football contingent — Senobio Ortiz (26 points), Nikolai Hernandez and Torres.

Harlandale wins ninth straight Frontier Bowl

Rodriguez’s performance helped Harlandale win its ninth consecutive Frontier Bowl game against McCollum. Harlandale now leads the annual Frontier Bowl series at 32-23-2. The Frontier Bowl has been played between the two Harlandale ISD schools since 1964. “We stayed together through a tough season,” Harlandale coach Albert Torres said. Torres said by retaining the Frontier Bowl title for a ninth straight season, it will provide a boost for both Rodriguez, a junior, and his Harlandale teammates returning next year.

Kyle Lehman too much for McCollum

The Kyle Lehman Lobos used their speed and explosiveness to get into the end zone as they cruised by the McCollum Cowboys 33-0 on Nov. 20 at Harlandale Memorial Stadium. Lehman rushed for 340 yards while amassing 450 yards of total offense in dominating McCollum. McCollum struggled offensively in the contest as they were limited to 155 total yards by Lehman. But McCollum could not stop the Lehman scoring onslaught as Payton scored on a 61-yard run on a sweep in the third quarter. McCollum plays Veterans Memorial at 7:30 p.m. Friday at D.W. Rutledge Stadium.

Non-district matches exist so that teams can work out the rough spots before the wins and losses become more consequential. “We didn’t have a preseason,” McCollum coach Valerie Vieyra said. McCollum tightened up its defense in the third game and held off a Floresville challenge after the teams battled point for point until late in the game. I feel like we were really hitting our stride when we got shut down, McCollum coach Geoff Curtin said. McCollum wins Harlandale softball tournament titleThe McCollum Cowboys rolled over their opponents in taking the title at the Harlandale ISD Softball Tournament, capped off by a 15-4 win over the Pleasanton Lady Eagles in the tournament championship game Saturday at Tejeda Sports Complex. During the three-day tournament, McCollum scored a staggering 64 runs against the five opponents they played, while allowing only 11 runs as they went undefeated in tournament play. I feel super proud of the girls, especially since this is our own tournament as a district, said McCollum coach Alessia Gallegos. Quintero, the tournament MVP, said energy and team chemistry have helped McCollum get off to a good start. Stelzig ended the Alamo Heights threat by getting Janes to strike out swinging on a fastball for the third out.
