The OLLU womenโs soccer team went head to head with the StMU Rattlers at 1 p.m. on Jan. 30 for their season opener. This was the first competitive game the OLLU Saints have played in over a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. โCOVID affected us in a particular way,โ said Yolanda Vazquez, senior on the OLLU womenโs soccer team. โIf they continue playing this wayโฆthey could win the conference and possibly even nationals,โ said, Ruth Brinkley, senior marketing representative for Mercury Insurance and OLLU soccer parent.

Many college students in the San Antonio area have decided to attend classes on campus. About a month into the fall semester, school officials say theyโre keeping a close eye on the situation to make sure the COVID-19 numbers stay as low as possible. โ(We) have people take their own temperature at home before they attempt to come to campus, whether they are faculty, staff or students. At St. Maryโs University, students and staff members must also electronically complete a health check and report any confirmed cases, which are then reflected on the schoolโs site. Since the beginning of the semester at St. Maryโs University, there have been 11 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with five still active between faculty and students.

El Carnaval de los Muertos
El Dia de Los Muertos also known as the Day of the Dead, is a Mexican Holiday in remembrance of friends and families who have passed. The Day of The Dead has a lot of meaning for many but for others its also an opportunity to learn about the culture. Alyssah Gonzales a current OLLU said Im really glad we came because it was a really cool event, just coming really helped me become more aware of my own culture, because i feel like im very disconnected from my Mexican heritage. OLLU along with a non-profit organization Urban 15 helped host El Carnaval De Los Muertos on November 1st which started at the Elmendorf lake and ended with a reception from 8-9:30pm in a courtyard between Flores and centennial dorm halls. Current OLLU students, faculty, and staff got to enjoy complimentary food, drinks, pan de muerto, and music.

On october 21st the Final Calavera Workshop was hosted by Urban 15 and OLLU at the Library Community room making preparations for El Carnaval De Los Muertos on November 1st that will take place at Our Lady of the lake. Coffee and pan dulce was offered to the participants and activities such as face painting, calavera, and flower crown making. The participants were also invited to participate at the Carnaval De Los Muertos which will start at Elmendorf Lake and end with a reception between Sentinel and Flores Hall starting at 7pm. SAN ANTONIO-Our Lady of the Lake (OLLU) students, staff and faculty now have the opportunity to show off their skills on stage thanks to an event called Coffee House Live Music. This event is put on by the International Folk Culture Center (IFCC). Today we had 75 people attend which I think is great, that was my goal and we made it. OLLU cheerleader, Kamariah Bradleey gave her opinion on the event and said, You could see the talent that we have here at OLLU. Faculty, staff and students came together to spread awareness on bullying, hazing, domestic violence and drinking abuse. Students had the opportunity to speak with Health Services, Counseling Services, OLLU Cares, SLD, University Police, and more. SAN ANTONIO The Volunteer Unity Council (VUC) comes together every week to serve the OLLU campus and the San Antonio community. Volunteering opportunities that students take part in can help their resumes, scholarship applications and students can be nominated for awards. Maricela Camargo, a senior, was presented with Presidents Award for completing over 100 hours of volunteer service. Being part of the OLLU community and getting your hands-on experience because with service here, its helped a lot, said Camargo. Future planned opportunities for the month of October are with the San Antonio food bank, San Antonio ISD, Goodwill and other on-campus community activities.
