Berths at the Class 5A Regional meet were on the line on Saturday morning, as area swimmers from Medina Valley, San Antonio Great Hearts Monte Vista, Great Hearts Northern Oaks, Cole, Southwest, Southwest Legacy, and Uvalde dove into the pool at NISD Natatorium for the District 29-5A Swimming & Diving Championships.

Buttons, Cowboys thrive at South San Tourney
For the five area teams that competed in the South San ISD Tournament from March 11-13, the main priority was preparation for the heart of their district seasons. We had some timely hits and were capitalizing on mistakes.โHost South San (7-8-1) split four tournament games. โHe threw strikes and moved the ball around,โ South San coach Robert Zamora said. We keep getting better.โBobcats senior John Ramos, recovering from a hamstring pull, put South San ahead with an RBI double in the fifth. โWe had opportunities,โ said Southwest Legacy coach Homer Flores, who was a South San assistant coach for 12 years.

Like kids at Christmas, District 28-5A teams will hurriedly unwrap one of the areaโs most promising title chases. McCollum, Southwest and Southwest Legacy โ along with Medina Valley โ all should have a shot at first place. Southwest and Medina Valley are established powerhouses. Many will point to Southwest (17-5, 5-0 in 2020) as the favorite. โThis is probably my youngest and most inexperienced team,โ Southwest coach Sandy Hernandez said, โbut I have five strong seniors.โHernandez said Southwest Legacy (6-7, 2-3), coached by her former assistant Teri Camarillo, could be the favorite because of its experience and junior ace Blanca Sanchez.

During Southwest Legacyโs girls basketball Senior Night, Titans coach mentioned Greg McWilliams that Ashley Corpus was one of three players in the older division of his first camp. The senior and her classmate Alyssa Renteria became 1,000-point scorers and helped the Titans qualify for the playoffs in back-to-back seasons. โItโs a big accomplishment for a new school,โ said Corpus, whoโll play next year at Georgian Court University in New Jersey. Corpus was a standout from her first varsity game, when she scored 35 points in a 75-60 win over Kennedy. โWithout her, I wouldnโt have scored 1,000 points and without me she wouldnโt have scored 1,000 points.

The Panthers (4-9, 1-4) hadnโt won their first District 28-5A game when they traveled to fifth-place Southwest Legacy. Medina Valley, despite occupying last place in the eight-team district, also has depth, rebounding ability and the capability of making long-range shots. The combination helped the Panthers hold off Southwest Legacy (9-8, 2-3), 47-44. โThey just did a better job of getting offensive rebounds and executing,โ Southwest Legacy coach Peter Abbott said. Southwest Legacy made just 32 percent of its field-goal attempts and shot 15 percent from three-point range.

After Southwest Legacy became the first team from its school to qualify for the postseason with a young team in 2019-20, it was easy to assume another playoff appearance was all but assured. 15 in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Class 3A poll, defeated the Titans (5-4) 57-37 Dec. 5 at Southwest Legacy. The Titans had won two of its previous three games going into the weekend, giving coach Greg McWilliams 399 career victories. So the Titans had to work on their player rotations and get new players experience two weeks later than anticipated, and while the season was in full swing. โMy seniors came in when I came (to Southwest Legacy),โ McWilliams said.

Throwing out the first Fire and Armor Bowl โ when a veteran Southwest team stomped Southwest Legacy in its first varsity season โ the last two games have been decided in overtime and in the final 37 seconds. Legacy (3-2, 1-0) has procured both after prevailing 17-14 in Fire and Armor Bowl III on Oct. 22 at the Alamodome. โThese kids just play with such passion,โ Southwest Legacy coach John Tarvin said. โAs great of a player as Andre Mitchell is, he canโt do it all.โFire and Armor Bowl III was scoreless after a quarter and Legacy led 10-7 at halftime. Sylas Gomez (9 of 15, 149 yards) threw touchdown passes to Davidsmeyer (77 yards, 3 catches) and Michael Mayhugh (56 yards, 4 receptions).

In their third varsity season, the Southwest Legacy Titansโ legacy still is in the formative stages. Southwest Legacy (1-2) proved once again on Oct. 8 that taking the Titans to an extra session is a bad idea. โHeโs a great young back,โ Southwest Legacy coach John Tarvin said. โWe had to stay humble.โMurphy scored on a four-yard run and Southwest Legacy was ruled offsides on the extra point. Southwest Legacy needed a win to stay on track for the playoffs.

After a five-game loss to Jay on Sept. 22, Southwest Legacy coach Tanya Martinez decided she needed to sharpen her teamโs mental focus. Southwest Legacy (1-2, 1-0) stomped Eagle Pass Winn (0-1 in district) 25-20, 25-13, 25-19 in their District 28-5A opener. โInstead of playing the situation, we started just playing the game,โ Martinez said. She did very well.โDaveigh Castaneda led Legacy with 23 digs. Sarah Hauck (16 assists, 7 digs), Kristen Howell (22 digs, 7 kills), and Amelia Parvin (8 kills, 7 digs) were key contributors, too.

Southwest Legacy raises its game at SWISD TourneySouthwest Legacy made what seemed a strong showing at the 2019 Southwest ISD Tournament, winning its last two games. Legacy, in just its second varsity season, lost only its final game, falling 6-3 to Veterans Memorial in its tournament finale. We played a lot of error-free baseball early in the tournament, Southwest Legacy coach Homer Flores said. Southwest Legacy ripped through the first two days, posting three shutouts while outscoring opponents 36-3. Jose Estrada picked up a save in that game and was the winning pitcher in a 5-4 win over Veterans Memorial.
