Briscoe Western Art Museum's Night of Artists debuts in person and online for 20th anniversary

The exhibition, auction and art sale features more than 250 new works by 75 contemporary Western artists.Festivities kicked off with an online auction of 235 lots that began on March 13, with bidding open until 10 p.m. March 27. The first portion of Night of Artists concludes with a Grand Live Auction held at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 27, which will feature 31 lots. As part of this second tier, works not sold at auction will be available at a fixed price.The Night of Artists exhibition will be on view through Sunday, May 9. Briscoe Museum celebrates the history of Black cowboys with latest addition to its collection
click to enlarge Courtesy of Briscoe Western Art MuseumSan Antonio's Briscoe Western Art Museum is more accurately showcasing the diversity of the Wild West with the newest addition to its collection, which will debut at the museum's upcoming seventh anniversary celebration.Western artist Mark Maggiori has donated his painting, which highlights the story of working Black cowboys, to the Briscoe's permanent collection. Maggiori's work was inspired by his fan base, who challenged the lack of diversity in his prior paintings amid the movements against racial injustice this summer.The painting will be officially unveiled during the Briscoe's birthday festivities on Saturday, October 24. "History tells us that cowboys were Black, Native American, Hispanic and even Chinese but Western art from that period does not reflect that. San Antonio's Briscoe Museum shows modern view of Native American stories in new exhibit

On Friday, September 25, the Briscoe Western Art Museum will debut its latest exhibition, "Visual Voices: Contemporary Chickasaw Art. ""Visual Voices" will showcase stories of the West and a modern view of Native American stories through 15 Chickasaw artists and almost 60 pieces of art. "The works included in 'Visual Voices' offer an opportunity for us all to reflect on that evolution. Visitors will have to decide for themselves how the exhibition embraces more universal themes of humanity, while traditional Western art lovers may ponder how some of the works may be considered Western art.sacurrent.com
Downtown museum cutting jobs and hours to combat COVID impact

The Briscoe Western Art Museum has laid off eight staff members and eliminated three other vacant positions. It's also made other operation changes to offset the drop in business caused by Covid-19.
