After winning their third-straight University Interscholastic League (UIL) Division 1 State Championship in the spring, the Alamo Heights girls’ golf team took that momentum into the summer tournaments.

Three South Texas High School softball coaches, two schools and a student-athlete were penalized by the University Interscholastic League (UIL) after an in-game scuffle, according to a news release.

The Lytle Pirates football team held midnight practice under the lights of their stadium.

The new districts for Texas high school football, basketball and volleyball were released on Thursday morning by the University Interscholastic League (UIL) as part of a biennial tradition that takes changing enrollment into consideration for its member 6A-1A schools.

The UIL will announce its reclassification and realignment for the 2024-2026 school years on Thursday morning. The district alignments and reconfigured every two years based on every member school’s enrollment figures.

High school football is back but under some extreme heat and temperatures. Hundreds of players and coaches across the state hit the field Monday for the official start of practice for the 2023 season.

A Somerset High School STEM instructor is teaching students about drones and pushing to add drone racing to UIL competitions.

House Bill 25 will require student athletes who compete in interscholastic competition to play on sports teams that correspond with the sex listed on their birth certificate at or near their time of birth.

The comment further hints at a possible fight between the state and the Biden administration over transgender rights.

If the bill becomes law, Texas will join at least five other states that have passed such legislation.

Under House Bill 25, K-12 student athletes would be prohibited from competing on school sports teams aligned with their gender identity. The bill will now head to the Senate, where it is expected to pass.

If passed, Texas' anti-transgender legislation will require student athletes to play on school sports teams that don't align with their gender identity.

Gov. Greg Abbott added the legislation to the special session agenda after similar bills failed to pass during the regular session earlier this year.

“It feels great,” Blackmore said. “We’re going back to the championship game, and we actually get to play it this year. I love how we can come through in a tight game like this against a great team. “You never know if you’re going to get back to state or if you’re ever going to have a chance to get back to a state championship. They think they’re going to win every game.”The Cougars will return to the Alamodome on Friday, March 12 to take on Tatum in the UIL Class 3A State Championship Game.

SAN ANTONIO – Following a rush of scheduling changes due to the winter storm, the University Interscholastic League has decided to postpone the girls state basketball tournament to March 10-11 at the Alamodome. The tournament was originally scheduled to be held on March 5 and 6. The extra days will give teams more opportunities to complete the playoffs in a safe manner. The boys state tournament will also be held in the Alamodome from March 12-13.

Leech, a former Boerne and Champion head boys basketball coach and current Boerne ISD Athletic Director, has been named one of the greatest basketball coaches in the history of the University Interscholastic League (UIL). East Central head coach Stan Bonewitz was also recognized on the list. District officials said even if they had decided not to remove the football team from the playoffs, the University Interscholastic League would have still taken the same course of action. The UIL has made it clear to Interim Superintendent Gilbert Garza Jr. that UIL would have removed the football team from the playoffs if the district did not withdraw the team. SAN ANTONIO – The University Interscholastic League (UIL) State Executive Committee has turned down an appeal by former Brandeis quarterback Jordan Battles and former Wagner running back L.J. Butler to play football for the Judson Rockets this season. After hearing testimony via Zoom on Tuesday afternoon from the players' parents, athletic directors, principals and both of their former head coaches, the committee determined that both players had transferred to Judson primarily for athletic purposes. Battles enrolled in Judson last February after leading the Broncos to the UIL State quarterfinals in each of the last two years, while Butler transferred in June after developing into one of the Thunderbirds' primary offensive weapons. The District Executive Committee for District 27-6A voted unanimously against both players suiting up for Judson on Aug. 12.

The UIL confirmed to KSAT it sent a notice Tuesday to district superintendents regarding updates to COVID-19 guidelines to match the recently updated TEA guidance. Greg Abbott, schools are allowed to have a maximum of 50% capacity for spectators in their stadiums as long as proper social distancing is maintained. All employees, parents, visitors and students ten years or older must wear face coverings or face shields when they attend an official UIL activity. Coaches and players not participating in games should have face coverings at all times as well, per the guidelines. The UIL is allowing 5A and 6A schools to start practice on Monday with official games scheduled to start Sept. 24.

SAN ANTONIO At least two San Antonio school districts are expected to further postpone the start of athletic practices due to the uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. In a statement, a district spokesperson said:At this time, SAISD Athletics will remain 100% virtual due to the uncertain COVID-19 circumstances in and around Bexar County. The new SAISD start date for in-person Athletics is Oct. 5.SAISD officials said the decision was made based on Metro Healths assessed risk level for schools. We are still monitoring the data and once the numbers show its truly safe we will consider bringing our students for practice, a South San district spokesperson said. SAISD and Edgewood ISD schools play football in the same 5A district.

SMALLER SCHOOLS KICK OFF FIRSTThis weeks opening festivities will not include traditional high school football powers like Judson, OConnor, Madison and Wagner. On July 21, the University Interscholastic League (UIL) announced that they would stagger dates for the start of all the high school sports seasons by school size. SCHEDULES CAN CHANGEIf theres one word that football teams across the state of Texas have learned over the past three months, its adaptability. Roughly 5.8% of high school football players will continue their careers in college.

High school football officially kicks off this Friday with Class 4A-1A teams taking the field one full month before the larger schools in Class 5A and 6A do the same. Local schools have already had a chance to test pre-game screenings during the start of the high school volleyball season. STREAMING SERVICESThis season, the UIL has lifted its ban on live-streaming high school football games, providing an alternative for fans to stay home and support their local team. A South Texas school district has officially suspended all UIL fine arts and athletic activities until Oct. 31, effectively ending its football season. Ben Bolt-Palito Blanco ISD, located west of Corpus Christi, announced last Tuesday that these extracurricular activities would be suspended for the first nine-week reporting period due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The University Interscholastic League has allowed high school football teams in smaller conferences, 1A to 4A, to practice this month. The larger schools, 5A and 6A, have to wait until Sept. 7 to begin officially begin practicing for football. UIL activities will resume and will follow all updated public health guidelines before and after school activities, including all fine arts and athletics.

AUSTIN, Texas While some big cities in Texas are reporting signs that an alarming surge in cases of the coronavirus may be leveling off, officials in counties along the border with Mexico said Tuesday that the outlook there remains bleak. Greg Abbotts past mandates that do not allow local officials to set their own stay-at-home restrictions. Texas on Tuesday reported more than 9,300 confirmed new cases and 131 deaths, the states second deadliest day of the pandemic. Meanwhile, Texas is pressing ahead with plans for high school football this fall. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.

High school sports across the country are in doubt across the country. Already this week California announced it would delay fall high school sports until spring even as Florida officials decided to press ahead with no changes to its July 27 start. Many of those Texas schools are located in large urban areas that have been hit hardest by the pandemic. Many Texas school districts are already adjusting the calendars for later starts and weeks of online learning to start the school year. Tim Teykl, head coach at Class 6A Alvin High School outside Houston, said he was happy with the delay because it is not a cancellation of the season.

Schools with the 1A to 4A designation can start meeting for games and meets in mid- to late-August. Schools in 5A or 6A, which are the biggest schools, will have to wait until September. Just last week Texas education officials relaxed a previous order that would have given public schools just three weeks from the start of the fall semester to reopen classrooms for in-person instruction.

To combat the virus spread and protect student-athletes, the UIL announced several additional safety requirements for when schools eventually resumed workouts. FACE COVERINGS REQUIREDIn accordance with Executive Order GA-29, face coverings and masks are now required for student-athletes to participate in workouts this summer and throughout the upcoming school year. LOCKER ROOMS, SHOWER FACILITIES OPENOne of the biggest changes is that student-athletes will now be allowed to enter locker rooms and shower facilities. Student-athletes are expected to report to their workouts in the appropriate equipment and return home to shower afterwards. Participants in these drills are not required to wear masks, while those not directly participating must wear them.

SCHERTZ, Texas With the rise in Covid-19 cases, many Texas high schools have opted to suspend summer workouts. Several of San Antonios top football prospects have been supplementing school summer conditioning at BSA Sports Lab in Schertz and now that school workouts have been put on hold, these training sessions have become even more important. Butler has been a regular fixture at BSA Sports Lab and he said hes grateful to be able to maintain his fitness routine after Judson closed summer conditioning. Most of those in attendance are on track to play collegiate football many projected to sign with Division I FBS programs. Players, including Judson senior linebacker Donnie Moody, said they are a little nervous about a cancelled, or incomplete season.

In some ways, it was only a matter of time. Wednesday evening, the University Interscholastic League recommended that all schools under its jurisdiction suspend summer strength and conditioning workouts immediately. The recommendation will stay in effect until July 13 in part due to the anticipated swell of coronavirus cases during July 4 celebrations, and will include all rehearsals, practices and instruction. The vast majority of school districts in the San Antonio area have already suspended athletic activities. UIL will continue to work with state officials and monitor CDC and other federal guidance to determine any potential modifications to UIL summer guidelines.

On Friday morning, the UIL announced that they have modified their ongoing suspension of spring activities and athletic events. This comes after Governor Greg Abbott issued an Executive Order mandating that schools remain temporarily closed through May 4 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Initially, via a March 19 press release, the UIL had intended to resume their athletic schedule on that same date. Now, in-person practices, rehearsals and workouts will remain suspended ‘until further notice.’There has been no update on the status of the UIL State Boys Basketball Tournament. All in-person practices, rehearsals and workouts remain suspended until further notice and remote instruction remains in place.
