SAN ANTONIO – A brush fire near U.S. Highway 281 and Mogford Road in south Bexar County burned nearly 50 acres Wednesday evening, county fire officials say.
Crews from at least eight volunteer fire departments spent several hours battling the fire which broke out around 6 p.m.

Fire officials said heavy brush, dry conditions and sandy soil made it difficult to get around and fight the flames.
"Out here, the sand is very powdery, known as blow sand or sugarloaf sand. It is very hard to drive in especially since we've had the drought conditions that we've had," said Dep. Chief Charles Metzger with the Sandy Oaks Volunteer Fire Department. "Unfortunately, it makes it real difficult for us to be able to get trucks in and move around in it without the trucks sinking."
Fire officials say no homes were in danger and the brush fire was fully contained within a few hours. The cause was unknown Wednesday evening.
