Robert Dudley accused of swindling would-be car buyers out of money

SAN ANTONIO – Robert Dudley, 48, is charged with theft in connection with a car deal involving an African man who claims he took more than $19,300 and failed to deliver the vehicle.

An arrest warrant affidavit states that Dudley has been accused of this sort of thing before and even faced theft charges in a 2010 case.

This time, the victim is a man from the Republic of Equatorial Guinea who told police he had wired $19,300 to Dudley in May as payment toward a $70,000 Lexus.

The man told police he never received the car and no longer was able to get in touch with Dudley after he cashed the check.

The affidavit states that the victim later had a friend contact Dudley and express interest in buying the same vehicle.

Police said the victim told them Dudley began negotiating with the friend to purchase the same car which he had already agreed to sell to the victim.

A warrant was issued for Dudley's arrest last Thursday and he was arrested the following day.

San Antonio police have had numerous complaints against Dudley for the same type of crime, the affidavit stated.
