SAN ANTONIO – Forty years in prison is the sentence for a man accused of killing local Tejano singer, 42-year-old Mark Ortega.
His widow, Edna Ortega, and other family members were there as the sentence was handed down to 29-year-old Stephen Richard Bailey.
It's been three years since the shooting death of Mark Ortega. Edna Ortega said seeing Bailey sentenced to 40 years in prison for her husband's murder was gratifying.
"We saw no remorse, we saw none whatsoever," said Edna Ortega.
She said Bailey never said a word or even looked at her during the sentencing hearing.
"He's not the type of person who even has a conscience, why would he have remorse? He shot Mark 24 times, so someone who shoots someone like that point-blank doesn't have a conscience," said Edna Ortega.
According to the arrest affidavit, her husband's body was found inside the bathroom of an airplane hangar, which is detached from his home.
The affidavit also referred to an ongoing feud between Bailey and Mark Ortega.
"Everybody knows what kind of husband he was, what kind of man he was, what kind of friend, what kind of son, what kind of father he was. So I'm not looking for any answers from him, I just want justice," said Edna Ortega.
With her husband's pictures still prominently displayed in her home, she said she will keep his memory alive not only by playing his music, but also through the MARK Foundation, which stands for "Make Animal Rescue Kount."
The foundation is in Mark's honor, dedicated to helping shelter animals find forever homes.
"I wanted to get justice for my husband's death and we have that closure now, we know that the man who did this to him is going to be locked away for a very long time and when, and if, parole ever comes, the family intends to be there," said Edna Ortega.
A second person connected to the murder will be sentenced Monday. Nicole Bulack could face up to eight years in prison.
