Dogs from Austin area shelters flown to Florida by rescue group following winter storm
SAN MARCOS – Shelter dogs from the Austin area just got the trip of a lifetime after ice storms and freezing weather affected most of the state two weeks ago. Wings of Rescue, a donation-based charity that specializes in flying large-scale transports of at-risk shelter pets from overcrowded shelters and disaster areas, flew 70 shelter dogs from San Marcos to Florida on Wednesday. AdThe group has flown four flights and carried more than 400 shelter dogs and cats affected by the recent winter storms. The organization said it would continue to help affected shelter pets by flying an additional 300 affected shelter pets on three flights, including the flight from San Marcos. “While at Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League, all of the pets flown will be evaluated and receive any follow-up medical care needed before being put up for adoption,” Wings of Rescue told KSAT.

Great Horned Owl flying free over San Antonio again after rescue
SAN ANTONIO – A Castle Hills resident discovered a Great Horned Owl that was injured and in need of help about a month ago. Cuny said a rescue volunteer caught the owl that was brought to the Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation sanctuary in Kendalia. Since they are nocturnal hunters, the Great Horned Owl probably landed on a street or roadway to eat its prey, Cuny said. However, the rescued Great Horned Owl was spared the worst. The Great Horned Owl was returned to familiar territory for its release.

WATCH: San Antonio construction worker pulled from collapsed trench in dramatic rescue
SAN ANTONIO – Emergency crews pulled a man who was trapped in a deep trench on the Northwest Side after about two hours of efforting on Tuesday. The man, a construction worker, fell into the trench while his crew was excavating near Galm Road and Swayback Ranch. He was waist-deep in dirt, officials said after the dramatic rescue. After San Antonio Fire Department crews were able to pull the man out of the hole, he was immediately transported to the hospital an Airlife helicopter. About five to 10 San Antonio Fire Department members lowered themselves into the trench to strap the man to a stretcher.

Boerne toddler hailed a hero for alerting mother to high-water danger involving his father, sister
BOERNE, Texas – A 3-year-old boy was recognized as a hero Tuesday night by the Boerne Fire Department for his quick thinking that led to the rescue of his father and his young sister from high water. Miles Butry was puddle jumping with his 6-year-old sister, Ella, and their father, Blake Butry, near their home on Windsor Drive on May 12, when something went wrong when were getting ready to leave. Blake Butry was able to find his daughter in the dark ditch and they rode the water about 250 feet into a culvert. “Life slows down and you just focus on what’s in front of you,” Blake Butry said about the scary moments. Afraid his son would fall in, Blake Butry kept one foot in the rushing water to catch him, singing worship songs, while they waited.
