Mayor leads workout for primary school children

Nirenberg has made focus on fitness part of his new administration

SAN ANTONIO – The mayor traded his suit and tie for shorts and tennis shoes Monday as he spent some time working out with students.

Mayor Ron Nirenberg talked to students at Pearce Primary School about the importance of healthy eating and having an active lifestyle.

How San Antonio's decades of economic segregation impacts schools

He also led more than 100 fourth- and fifth-graders in some workout routines.

Since taking office, Nirenberg has worked on improving the quality of life for everyone in San Antonio.

He has focused his efforts on the South Side which has the highest rates of diabetes and obesity.

Two Losoya Intermediate students were also honored as the first nominees for a citywide award by "forward in fitness."
