Neighbors feeling uneasy after man shot on porch by stranger on SE Side

The suspect is still on the run, according to SAPD

SAN ANTONIO – A man is in critical condition after he was shot by another man who was found asleep on the porch of his grandfather’s home overnight, according to San Antonio police.

The shooting happened around 12:16 a.m. Saturday on the Southeast Side in the 1500 block of McKinley.

Neighbors who didn’t want to be identified said the shot woke them up.

“My wife got startled because she heard the gunshot but it was really, really close,” one neighbor said.

When officers arrived at the home, where the 24-year-old victim lives with his grandfather, they found his girlfriend applying pressure to his chest.

“Real nice kid. Never, you know. He works hard and I actually know his grandfather too, very well. They’re great friends with my parents as well,” the first neighbor said about the victim.

The victim’s girlfriend told police another man was found asleep on the back porch of the home. Her boyfriend said he was going to try and wake him up.

However, when he did, the man who was asleep woke up and shot him in the chest, authorities said.

The armed man then took off in an unknown direction.

People living on McKinley Ave are shaken up after this shooting. Some said they didn’t think this would happen there.

“This startled us just because it was on our street and nothing ever happens on our street,” one man said.

“Living here all my life so it’s kind of traumatic in a way, you know, especially after we found out what was going on and that there was someone actually sleeping in the back. You know, it could happen at our house as well,” another man added.

EMS arrived and transported the injured man to the Brooke Army Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

A description of the suspect hasn’t been provided as of yet. The investigation continues.
