Sabinal Independent School District, a rural school district west of San Antonio, reports it has emerged from its first lockdown without incident.
About 600 students at the high school and the nearby elementary school stayed under lockdown for at least two hours early Tuesday afternoon, according to Sabinal Police Chief Jesus Reyes.
Reyes said a 17-year-old student has received four texts from a 19-year-old young man she had met in San Antonio about a month ago.
Reyes said the last text read, "Get out of the way. I'm going to shoot up the school."
The police chief said after he was alerted by the principal, the Uvalde County Sheriff's Office, local constables, and U.S. Border Patrol also responded.
Reyes said he also contacted SAPD.
He said its officers found the young man at his home in San Antonio, and he will likely face charges.
The chief said he is thankful the lockdown ended peacefully.
"They've been practicing. The schools have been doing their drills," Reyes said. "Apparently, it went pretty well and we had parents thanking us for the way we handled it."
