SAN ANTONIO – Residents in a southwest San Antonio mobile home park on Plumnear Road near Leon Creek were given a notice Wednesday to vacate their homes within due to bacteria in drinking water.
The notice from the Development Services Department stated homes were deemed unsafe due to recent heavy flooding and that area drinking water tested positive for E.Coli and Coliform bacteria.
Residents can be fined $2,000 a day if they refuse to leave.
Neighbors say more than 4 feet of water flooded the mobile home park.
But many of them don't want to leave for fear of looters.
"The people that live here said that the last time a lot of people were robbed. People were coming in here because they knew it was an evacuated area, so people were coming in with trucks taking everybody's stuff," said Norma Sifuentes, who moved to the park two weeks ago. "You know, I already lost so much so for me to get my stuff stolen would be devastating."
The Salvation Army and San Antonio Food Bank have been delivering food to the neighborhood due to those reports of looters.
The American Red Cross set up a 24 hour shelter inside the gym at nearby McAuliffe Middle School where those displaced can get 3 meals a day.
Roughly 20 people were expected to stay there Wednesday night.
The Red Cross plans to keep the shelter open as long as needed.
The city shut off electricity to the mobile home park for safety reasons, according to the notice to vacate.
