Big Bend hosts record visitation in 2021
The wide-open spaces of west Texas lured a record 581,000 recreational visits to remote Big Bend in 2021. These numbers reflect a 25% increase since 2019 (464,000), the last year the park was completely open, and a 49% increase since 2016 (390,000). Late in the afternoon of September 27, 2021, the National Park Service received information that a female hiker was overdue in Big Bend National Park. She was then flown by a Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter to Big Bend Regional Medical Center in Alpine, Texas. “The coordinated actions of all agencies involved led to the successful rescue of a lost hiker,” said Big Bend Sector Chief Sean L. Backcountry campsites, overnight floating on Rio Grande reopen at Big Bend National Park
The Big Bend National Park is expanding its campsite options and recreational offerings after they were forced to close due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Rio Grande will be available for overnight river trips, both commercial and private, too. The Chisos Basin Lodge and Restaurant, park visitor centers, Rio Grande Village campground, the Cottonwood campground and the Rio Grande Village RV campground remain closed at this time.
