UIL releases cutoff numbers for 2022-24 realignment
The UIL released conference cutoff numbers and preliminary enrollment figures for the 2022-24 reclassification and realignment Wednesday, which will result in significant changes to the high school sports landscape in the Rio Grande Valley. The cutoff number for Class 5A is between 1,300-2,224, Class 4A is 545-1,299, Class 3A is 250-544, Class 2A is 105-249, and Class 1A is 104.9 and below. The football conference and division numbers are broken down even further with Class 5A-1A split into Division I and Division II. The most notable changes include Donna North, Edinburg Vela, Harlingen South, La Joya Juarez-Lincoln and PSJA North moving down from Class 6A to Class 5A for all sports. “It’s going to make the 5A districts even more tough,” said PSJA North head coach Marcus Kaufmann.myrgv.com
Mission Eagles set to soar under first-year head coach Longoria
MISSION — Three yards is all that separated Mission High from the regional quarterfinals of the Class 6A playoffs last season. Mission is set for Year 1 under head coach Daniel Longoria, the program’s special teams coordinator the past five seasons. He joined the Eagles’ staff when former head coach Koy Detmer, who resigned in January to take the same position in Somerset, took over in 2016. “Our senior class is a strong class and I’m very honored and humbled that our senior class has great leadership skills, and that’s where the positivity comes from,” Longoria said. In the fourth round of the UIL Class 6A softball playoffs, O'Connor scored 6-runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to defeat Judson in game 1, while the Reagan and Navarro baseball teams keep their seasons alive with game two victories over Smithson Valley and Canyon Lake respectively.
Falcons sweep area series against Brennan
ROBSTOWN — For the second consecutive season with playoffs, the Los Fresnos Falcons are heading to the Class 6A regional quarterfinals. The Falcons won Game 1 by a score of 5-3 on Thursday night. The Bears recorded the first hit on a Connor Meagher single, but the basepaths were cleared as the Falcons turned a 4-6-3 double play. Brennan got a pair of runners on base in the third, but Loa recorded back-to-back punchouts to end the threat. East Valley softball teams prepared to begin Round 2
The start of the second round awaits East Valley softball teams tonight. In Class 6A, Harlingen South and Los Fresnos begin three-game playoff series against Northside O’Connor and Northside Warren, respectively. South and O’Connor meet in Game 2 at 2 p.m. Saturday at Alice, with Game 3 set for 30 minutes afterward if necessary. A third game, if necessary, will be held 30 minutes afterward if necessary. The Weslaco High Panthers and PSJA North Raiders each picked up crucial wins in shutout victories to highlight Friday’s bi-district action across the Rio Grande Valley in the Class 6A softball playoffs. PSJA North, meanwhile, kicked off its postseason Friday with a 5-0 home victory over San Benito to take the first game of their best-of-three bi-district series. Brownsville Vets improves to 18-5 with the win and will play either Corpus Christi Ray or Rio Grande City in the area round. Mercedes, the District 32-5A champion, advances to face Victoria West in the area round next weekend with game times and locations still to be determined. In Class 6A, East Central (17-3-1, 2-0) and South San (12-3, 3-0) led 26-6A and 27-6A, respectfully. TAPPS District 3-II hadnt begun its schedule, but Holy Cross (11-2-1) and Providence (6-7) clearly established themselves as front runners. Providence had closed the gap on perennial district champions Holy Cross for the past few seasons.
