During the COVID-19 pandemic, Meals on Wheels San Antonio, a nonprofit organization that helps to provide meal deliveries to local seniors, has seen an increase in the need for its services. On Wednesday, it is set to break ground on a new facility that has been years in the making to serve those who are most vulnerable in our community.

SAN ANTONIO โ Vinsen Faris, CEO of Meals on Wheels San Antonio, says heโs already started getting calls from seniors grateful for the chance to get their COVID-19 shots without leaving home. About 4,000 people are served through Meals on Wheels in San Antonio, Faris says about one-third of them have asked to be put on the list to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. The partnership comprises of the City of San Antonio, San Antonio Housing Authority and San Antonio Fire Department. Meals on Wheels provides the list of those interested clients to the city and they determine how to prioritize. H-E-Bโs annual Feast of Sharing may not include its traditional in-person dinner events and volunteer opportunities, but thatโs not stopping the company from donating more than 300,000 meals to fight hunger this holiday season.The latest effort from the grocery chain includes a partnership with Meals on Wheels San Antonio which will deliver 3,400 meals to homebound seniors in the Alamo City. The meal โ which H-E-B will sponsor โ will be a proper holiday feast, featuring turkey with stuffing and gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans, a dinner roll, milk and dessert.Launched in 1989, H-E-Bโs Feast of Sharing serves more than 250,000 meals annually. In Texas, H-E-B will make monetary and food donations to 18 Texas food banks and more than 40 hunger relief agencies such as Meals on Wheels.The meal delivery will take place Wednesday, enlisting the volunteer efforts of H-E-B employees โ which the company calls partners โ and Meals on Wheels staff.

The new facility will allow the organization to provide 700,000 meals a year to senior centers, thereports. SAN ANTONIO The number of people needing food delivered to their homes during the COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically increased, but the volunteers needed to make the deliveries have dropped significantly, Meals on Wheels San Antonio officials said. Currently, Meals on Wheels San Antonio is serving more than 4,500 clients. Before the pandemic began, about 160 volunteers were delivery meals daily, but just last week that number dwindled to about 29 volunteers a day. San Antonio Meals on Wheels is extending its services to more seniors and veterans in San Antonio. Kristin Rivera, communication engagement director of Meals on Wheels San Antonio, said since the pandemic began, there is more need for meals and deliveries. Meals on Wheels and Soldiers Angels are now teaming up to meet the need. (The pandemic) presented a bigger challenge, said Steven Zuniga, area manager of Soldiers Angels.
