Man wanted for murder captured 4 years later

Joe Martinez III, 24, arrested Friday

A man was arrested Friday after officials spent four years investigating a fatal San Antonio shooting.

Officials said Joe Martinez III, 24, was allegedly involved in the shooting that took place on Feb. 10, 2010, in the 1700 block of West Laurel Street.

According to police, the night before the shooting, two rival groups got into a verbal confrontation. The next day, Martinez and a group of his friends approached the victim. Martinez allegedly pulled out a handgun and shot the victim.

On March 20, after an extensive investigation, a warrant was issued for Martinez's arrest.

Through investigations and surveillance, members of the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force and SAPD officers identified Martinez as he and his girlfriend, Rebecca Rodriguez, 23, left a hotel in the 2100 block of Southwest Loop 410.

Officials approached Martinez, identified themselves and took him into custody without incident.

"I am grateful for the successful efforts displayed by our task force officers in arresting this fugitive, but more importantly I extend my sincere gratitude to the SAPD detectives, who worked diligently and persistently over the past four years so that Martinez could finally be brought to justice," said Robert R. Almonte, United States marshal for the Western District of Texas.

Martinez is being held at the Bexar County Jail.
