Man shot by DPS trooper in Guadalupe County

Man was resisting arrest, reached for trooper's gun, DPS says

SAN ANTONIO – A man was shot by a Department of Public Safety trooper while reaching for his gun, according to DPS.

A spokesman said the trooper stopped the man on FM 725 near Leisure Village in north Guadalupe Co. around 1 a.m. Saturday.

DPS said the trooper was attempting to arrest him after the man failed a sobriety test, but the man was resisting.

A spokesman said the officer shot the man with a stun gun, but that didn't stop him.

That's when officials said the man reached for the trooper's gun.

"(A) scuffle ensued. The trooper used (his) security weapon (and) struck one time in the torso," said Sgt. Jason Reyes with DPS.

The man was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center in critical condition.

The trooper was not injured.

An investigation is underway.
